Joseph Delvalle, a fourth-year MESA student at Butte College, has been awarded the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) GE Scholarship. Delvalle will complete his studies at Butte College this spring and transfer to Chico State to pursue a bachelor's degree in mechatronics.
Delvalle initially set his sights on becoming a firefighter, motivated by his athleticism and inspired by his father's career in the field. However, his passion for math and engineering ultimately led him to change course. After moving to Chico four years ago and enrolling in classes at Butte College's Chico Center, Delvalle was encouraged by his roommate, an engineering student at Chico State, to pursue his true interests.
Delvalle said that being part of such a rigorous, time-intensive major means dedicating yourself 24 hours a day, often sacrificing social and leisure activities. Winning the SHPE GE Scholarship, he says, is validation of his hard work and proof that he's on the right path.
The SHPE GE Scholarship recognizes outstanding Hispanic students pursuing degrees in STEM fields. SHPE, a nonprofit organization, empowers the Hispanic community by promoting STEM education and careers. Through scholarships, resources, and events, SHPE helps individuals like Delvalle achieve their full potential.
